PARALYMPICS - KEARNEY TAKES SILVER MEDAL IN INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
WICKLOW'S Helen Kearney (23) today (Sunday) took Ireland's first equestrian trophy of the 2012 Paralympic Games in London with a remarkable Silver Medal score of 76.700 per cent on her grey Irish Sport Horse Mister Cool.
Kearney, who had previously won a Bronze at the 2011 European Para Equestrian Championships, has been competing in para equestrian dressage for the last eight years.
Horse Sport Ireland Chairman Joe Walsh said: "I'd like to congratulate Helen Kearney for her fantastic achievement at Greenwich Park today, which was well deserved. It's another great day for Irish equestrian sport."
A personal best was also achieved in the Grade 1a championship by Dubliner Geraldine Savage with Blues Tip Top Too, when the duo finished in seventh place on a score of 68.800.
The Grade 1a championship Gold Medal was won by Britain's Sophie Christiansen and Janeiro 6 with a score of 82.750, while the Bronze went to Singapore's Laurentia Tan, riding Ruben James 2, scoring 73.650.
Kilkenny-born James Dwyer this morning claimed sixth place in the Grade IV individual dressage championships on 68.516, while Eilish Byrne with her chestnut gelding Youri on Saturday returned a score of 73.429 per cent to place fifth in the individual Grade II competition.
