COYLE SNATCHES GIJON GRAND PRIX TROPHY FROM WORLD CLASS FIELD
DERRY-born rider Trevor Coyle produced a dazzling performance at Gijon in Spain tonight when he out-jumped a world class field to take the prestigious Banco Herrero Grand Prix trophy.
The 53 year-old, aboard the French-bred mare Jubilee d'Ouilly, returned the only double clear round of the competition to collect the 42,000 euro prize against stiff opposition.
French star Penelope Leprevost came closest to Coyle in the 12 horse final round with Mylord Carthago, but a fence down on her second outing took her out of contention for the trophy. Britain's Laura Renwick and Oz de Breve finished in third, also on four faults.
Coyle was runner-up in the 1999 World Cup with the Irish Sport Horse Cruising and made the decider again in 2003, but tonight's win puts him back at the forefront of Irish show jumping.
Team Ireland's show jumping manager Robert Splaine said: "This was a terrific win for Trevor and it shows he is a force to be reckoned with in the future. Gijon is a six-day five star show, and Irish riders took three wins and two runner-up places against some of the world's top combinations."
