TWOMEY TAKES FOURTH IN SWISS GRAND PRIX

THIRTY-four year old Billy Twomey narrowly missed repeating last year's Grand Prix victory in Basel, Switzerland today (Sunday) when finishing fourth in the five star competition with Sue Davies's mare Tinka's Serenade.

Leading after two clear rounds from a starting field of 45 of the world's top riders, the Corkman finally found himself outpaced by French star Roger Yves Bost, who was piloting Jessica Kurten's former mount Castle Forbes Myrtille Paulois, and who stopped the clock more than two seconds ahead of Twomey in the final round.

Eleven combinations went through to the jump-off, and just six went clear, with Bost picking up the 116,000 euro first prize and Twomey settling for a not inconsiderable 35,000 euro reward for his fourth place.

Ireland's other Grand Prix competitor, Tipperary's Denis Lynch, faulted once first time out with Lantinus and didn't make the cut for the two remaining rounds.

Twomey won the Basel Grand Prix on the same day last year, also riding Tinka's Serenade.
