Horses Saved from Reno Fire
A fast-moving fire south of Reno, Nevada, burned structures and threatened homes on Thursday.
Faced with short notice and only minutes to respond, neighbors and animal control officers raced to save horses, goats, a llama, chickens and other animals according to the Reno Gazette-Journal (RJG.com).
Some residents were able to get home in time to load their horses onto the trailer. Other folks weren't so fortunate - either they couldn't get there in time, or they didn't have enough room on their trailer for all their animals.
Animal Control officers, sheriff's deputies and volunteers stepped in to help.
Approximately 100 horses and other animals were evacuated to the Reno-Sparks Livestock Events Center which was able to accommodate them all.
RJG.com quoted one animal owner's description of the rescue: "Awesome."

** Reno Fire Update: Maplewood Stables, home of Hunter/Jumper trainer, clinician and judge, Julie Winkel, was surrounded by flames in Thursday's fire.
All of the horses and residents were safely evacuated and the barn facilities were saved, but Winkel's residence was burned to the foundations.
The equestrian community is rallying around with offers of support.
