'I'll Have Another' - NY Times Reports History of Soundness Issues

The New York Times is reporting that Triple Crown contender, I'll Have Another, had a history of lameness issues prior to and during his bid for racing history.

The New York Racing commission required trainer Doug O'Neill to submit veterinary records prior to granting him a racing license for NY state prior to the Belmont.  The records were examined by veterinarians on behalf of the NY Times.  Records showed that the horse had changes indicating osteoarthritis which is unusual in a three-year old horse and that he had tendonitis which resulted in his withdrawal the day before the Belmont Stakes.  O'Neill described the tendonitis as a 'freakish injury.'

Records also showed that I'll Have Another had been given injections of pain-killers and joint fluid during the training period prior to the Belmont.  Such injections are not prohibited in the racing industry.

O'Neill has been suspended for drug and veterinary infractions several times during his training career.
