The Jockey Club stands by its support for the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, Bloodhorse.com reports.
In a statement following the New York Times article last week by Joe Drape regarding horses in poor health under TRF-sponsored care, James L. Gagliano, president and chief operating officer of The Jockey Club said the organization would stand behind its support for the foundation, while continuing to look into allegations made in the New York Times article.
“The Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation has done terrific work with retired Thoroughbreds for a long period of time,” Gagliano said in the statement. “We are working with the foundation’s board and management team to get a better understanding of this matter and to ensure that all TRF horses are cared for in the appropriate manner. We will continue to support retirement efforts, including those of the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, and we encourage others in the Thoroughbred industry to do the same.”
Through a checkoff program enabling breeders and owners of horses being registered with The Jockey Club to voluntarily give extra money at the time of their foal registration, members can donate to Thoroughbred Charities of America, and the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation. According to Bloodhorse.com, The Jockey Club has contributed $300,000 to the TRF and TCS since 2009 via the checkoff program.
