Tatiana Dzavik Continues to Dominate Young Horse Series

Blainville, QC – Tatiana Dzavik dominated the fifth and final qualifying event in the eastern region of the Jump Canada Young Horse Series, held at the Concours Hippiques de Parc Été from August 10 to 14 in Blainville, QC. As the Eastern Regional Final, double qualifying points were up for grabs.

Dzavik ended the qualifying competitions the way she began, with a win in the Seven and Eight-Year-Old Division aboard her horse Winette. The pair put in two impressive clear rounds and were the only ones to finish fault-free in the jump-off, posting a time of 32.53 seconds. By Ramon and out of a Jasper dam, Winette has placed in numerous Young Horse Series competitions this season, including a win at the opening event in the eastern region at the Concours Hippique de St. Lazare in May.

Finishing second was Nicolas Bayzelon and Lazer HB, another pair who has already been in the winner’s circle this season. The seven-year-old bay Luxembourg gelding put in a clear first round, but had the fourth fence down in the jump-off before crossing the timers in 33.19 seconds. Owned by Francois Bayzelon, Lazer HB was bred by HB Farm in Ste-Clothilde-de-Horton, QC. He is by Landslide and out of Queran mare. Under Bayzelon, he jumped to victory in the Seven and Eight-Year-Old Division at Concours Hippiques du Parc in June.

Dzavik also claimed third spot with Catwalk 19, a horse she co-owns with South Shore Farm of Mont-Saint-Hilaire, QC. Fresh off a victory in the division at CSI3* L’International Bromont in July, Catwalk 19 and 21-year-old Dzavik had a single time fault in the opening round, stopping the clock in 72.17 seconds, just over the 72-second limit. Bred in Germany, the eight-year-old Holsteiner gelding is by Contender and out of a Caretino mare.

Galatee Du Roset, ridden by Cathleen Mathers for owner Bianca Lafontaine, topped the Six-Year-Old Division. The pair had the first fence of the triple combination down in the opening round, crossing the timers in 63.86 seconds. The Swiss-bred mare is by Baloubet du Rouet and out of a Misterman mare.

Veronique Alary of Rockland, ON, and her horse Dynamo had two rails down on course to finish second with a total of eight faults. Bred by South Lane Farm in Vankleek Hill, ON, the Canadian Warmblood gelding is by their stallion Dr. Pepper and out of a Singular Joter mare.

Rounding out the top three was E.T.I. Leonardo, a bay Holsteiner stallion owned, ridden and bred by Christine Boisseau and Danimax Farm of Carignan, QC. By Lestroy, E.T.I. Leonardo is out of a Galisco van de Helle dam.


Dzavik rode SLF Cornetto to victory in the Five-Year-Old Division with two clear rounds and a jump-off time of 39.11 seconds. Owned by South Lane Farm, SLF Cornetto is by Cornet Obolensky and out of a Calido mare, and has only been in Canada a short time.

“We imported him from Europe about three weeks ago,” said Joe Palmer, who owns South Lane Farm with his wife Louise. “We originally bought him to take to Florida to do the young horse circuit there, but since he arrived early we thought we would enter him in this series as well.”

Palmer, who has run a breeding business for the past 18 years, says Cornetto is “the perfect horse for the North American market. He’s small, but has a fair amount of jump in him. He’s easy to ride, quick and neat. He doesn’t over jump, just steps in the ring and does what he needs to do. He has an excellent front end and back end. His mannerisms are perfect. He is the ideal adult amateur or junior horse.”

Palmer credits Dzavik with showcasing the grey Hannoverian gelding’s talent.

“Tatiana was the perfect rider for him,” said Palmer of the Toronto native. “I’m not sure any other rider would have had this kind of result so quickly. She is an exceptional young rider and we are looking forward to having her ride quite a few of the other South Lane Farm horses.”

Those horses could include any of the 60 or so youngsters Palmer currently has on his farm, all of which were bred with careful consideration.

“Everybody wants to bring the best horse they can to the market,” explained Palmer. “However, everyone has a different opinion on what the best horse is. For us, we’re trying to breed and raise very ridable horses that can perform at 1.20m and 1.30m. Right now everything is going according to plan. We have a number of very good youngsters back at home.”

Bea Jarzynska and her horse Giacomo Di Cantero also put in two clear rounds, and their jump-off time of 39.59 seconds was good enough for second place. The Belgian Warmblood stallion is by Eurocommerce Berlin and out of a Clinton mare.

Captain Quebec, owned and ridden by Francois Lamontagne of St. Eustache, QC, had the fastest jump-off time at 36.72 seconds, but a rail down at the eighth fence on course left the pair in third. The Holsteiner gelding was bred in Germany and is by Cassini and out of a Sir Dancer mare.

The purpose of the Jump Canada Young Horse Series is to encourage the development of young show jumping talent and to give Canadian breeders additional incentives to breed superior show jumping prospects. Competing on a level playing field, the horses are divided according to age and jump at a level suited to their development. This careful development allows the horses to gain valuable experience and advance to the higher levels of show jumping competition with confidence. The Jump Canada Young Horse Series also gives prospective buyers for the hunter and jumper markets an opportunity to view a large group of prospects in a competition setting.

The 2011 Jump Canada Young Horse Series is truly national in scope with competitions being held from coast to coast. The National Young Horse Finals will take place at the Canadian Show Jumping Tournament held from September 21-25 in Palgrave, ON.
