There are always 'human interest' stories for the Kentucky Derby and this year's meeting is no different. Even though there aren't any school-bus loads of owners, or any strong favorites going into the race this year, there are still some interesting stories out there.

This year, there is a female jockey in contention - Anna "Rosie" Napravnik is seeking to become the first female jockey to win the Derby. Only five women jockeys have ridden in the 137 year history of the race, and none have had the winning ride. Napravnik will be riding Pants on Fire who is not one of the most favored contenders. Napravnik has been riding professionally for six years and has won more than 1,100 races.

Also this year there is a female trainer, Kathy Ritvo, who is alive and at the Derby this year, because she received a heart transplant. She trains Mucho Macho Man who has a decent record in graded stakes, but is also not considered one of the favorites. Ritvo has been training since 1987 and has had over 150 winners during her career.

Dave "Rico" Flores, from Chicago, won the chance to place the $100,000 Dream Bet for this year's Derby. Last year's contestant won the bet and went home with $900,000. Flores is still preparing to declare his choice.

Calvin Borel, riding Twice the Appeal, has won the last two Kentucky Derbies on Mine That Bird and last year on Super Saver. In 2007, he also won on Street Sense. Borel is well known for his 'riding the rail style' and Churchill Downs is his home track so he knows the track well. Again, he's not riding one of the favorites, but he is always one to watch.

For all the participants, they each have their own story. Now the race will decide which story gets the most attention!
