Offspring Inspection: Osteochondrosis Results to be Published
Informative College at the 2012 KWPN Stallion Show
In January 2012, the KWPN will publish the first results of the structural offspring inspection for osteochondrosis (OC). The heritability of OC will be published together with the sport breeding trait (dressage or jumping) and the traits for conformation, free-movement / free jumping, and height so that breeders can evaluate OC health relative to other traits.
Traits may be presented in a sufficiently balanced manner from the time a stallion's oldest offspring are age three. Therefore, data on stallions approved or recognized in 2007 (the Z-year) will be published in January 2012, as well as data on several stallions which were approved at a later date but already had offspring at the time. Conformation traits will be presented in the familiar diagram system, which includes a horizontal beam to show the degree to which a stallion passes on each trait. Effective immediately, this system will also be applied to traits for sport, health, and height. Publishing these traits relative to one another creates a convenient genetic profile of stallions which can be read at a glance. The same system will be applied to harness horse stallions and Gelder horse stallions for relevant traits, provided enough information is available.
On Wednesday, February 1, at the KWPN Stallion Show in ’s-Hertogenbosch, a KWPN College will be held on OC, including a discussion on how the new data can be used to choose pairings for breeding talented and willing sport horses. The KWPN's goal is to provide breeders with better information. More information about this educational session will be posted soon on www.kwpn.org.

First Round Viewing of Stallions Age 3 and Older
One Jumper Stallion and Two Dressage Stallions Selected for Second Round Viewing
On Wednesday, November 23, the first round viewing of stallions born in 2008 and earlier took place following the final presentation of stallions participating in the performance test. Ten jumpers, four dressage horses, and one Gelder horse were evaluated by their respective selection committees.
The Gelder horse stallion was not invited for an under saddle presentation following the evaluation on hard ground.
The following four-year-old jumper stallion was invited to the second round viewing: Cat.no. 667, Conradin (Couletto out of Argentina s.Argentinus, breeder: Gestuet Lewitz of Steinfeld), registered to W. Bals of Gouda and A. Hoekstra of Middelharnis. This horse must participate in the GMB Stallion Competition as a requirement of the Second Round Viewing. After the competition, the KWPN Stallion Selection Committee will decide if Conradin qualifies for the third round viewing.
Both dressage stallions selected for the second round viewing are also four years old, and therefore must participate in the GMB Stallion Competition. The two selected horses are:
- Cat.no. 678 Jack Sparrow (Johnson out of Kiara s.Wolkentanz II, breeder: Hugo Schmidgall of Wuestenrot), registered to President Dressage Stables of Hoogvliet
- Cat.no. 680 Vitalis (Vivaldi out of Tolivia elite sport-(dres) s.D-Day, breeder: A. de Crom of Weert and W. Verbakel of Heusden), registered to Reesink Horses of Winterswijk and Stal 104 BV of Wijdewormer.
First round viewing riding horse stallions (born in 2009)
Entries and groupings of riding horse stallions (born in 2009) participating in the first round viewing are now posted on the KWPN website (click on the Schedule tab). The first round viewing kicks off on Tuesday, December 6, with selections beginning daily at 8:00 hours at the KNHS Center in Ermelo, The Netherlands. Stallions which pass the first round viewing will reconvene on February 1-4, 2012, at the KWPN Stallion Show in ‘s-Hertogenbosch.
Riding horse stallions are evaluated as dressage horses or jumpers, depending on the breeding direction indicated by each horse's registered party. Stallions indicated for both disciplines are evaluated in the jumper group. This year's stallions, whose names begin with the letter D, are arranged in alphabetical order by sire.
Additional selections for riding horse stallions and older Gelder horse stallions take place on December 19, 2011 in Ermelo.
The first round viewing of harness- and second round viewing of Gelder horse stallions (born in 2009) is on Friday, January 20, 2012, at the HORSE 2012 event in Hardenberg.
Five Dressage Horses, Four Jumpers, and One Gelder Horse Added to KWPN Breeding Stallion Collection
The fall performance test concluded on Wednesday morning, November 23, in Stegeren (Holland), where stallions were presented for the last time in front of the KWPN Stallion Selection Committees and a large audience of horse enthusiasts. Cat.no. 10-174, Namelus R x Corland x Lucky Boy xx, did not participate in the final presentation, as his registered party withdrew him from testing yesterday. Training riders presented the riding horses in groups of two in the indoor arena, while the Gelder horse Danser was presented in harness in the outdoor arena. Following the final presentation under saddle, the stallions returned to the arena in-hand, and the stallion selection committees announced the results and gave due credit to the stallions' breeders.

The KWPN (Royal Dutch Studbook) is the breeding organization of the Netherlands for jumpers, dressage horses, harness horses, and Gelder horses. The KWPN boasts about 30,000 members in the Netherlands and an average of 12,000 foals born each year. Performance, durability, and attractive conformation are the most important factors on which the international success of the Dutch horse is based. For years, the KWPN has topped the studbook rank list of the international breeding umbrella organization, the World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses (WBFSH).
