New Organization in New Jersey to Help Unprepared Horse Owners
Nancy Jaffer in the Star-Ledger is reporting that several organizations have been founded to help potential and current horse-owners understand the responsibilities, risks and expenses involved in caring for a horse. In response to the growing problem of unwanted and neglected horses, new strategies must be developed to alleviate the problem.
Jaffer quotes Sarah Ralston, a veterinarian and professor at Rutgers University, who said, "A lot of horse owners have fallen on hard times and can't afford to do the right thing for their horses." But beyond the immediate financial strain, many people are just not aware of all the necessary components of horse-care.
Ralston's strategy to avoid this scenario is to develop a network of informed and certified horse owners who can provide a resource for folks who are starting out in horse ownership or for those who are feeling overwhelmed.
Most horse owners first line of information is other horse owners which can be helpful or can be a disaster if the resource person does not have solid, accurate information.
The new organization, called WHOHO (pronounced "Whoa-Ho"), stands for "We're Horse owners helping Horse Owners." Organizations with similar goals and strategies have been formed in New York and Pennsylvania.
