According to an entry on OpposingViews.com written by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), the animal welfare organization has suggested an additional fee be tacked onto all Thoroughbred registration and ownership transfer papers.
PETA has suggested that "a $360 retirement fee for every foal registration, ownership transfer, and breeding registration" become a mandatory part of the process for all animals being dealt with through the Jockey Club. The program, dubbed the "Thoroughbred 360 Lifecycle Retirement Fund" would generate more than $20 million towards Thoroughbred retirement, according to PETA Vice President Kathy Guillermo.
