In previous times, psyllium has been used to help clear sand out of a horse's intestines, effectively minimizing the risk of sand colic. Now, psyllium may help insulin-resistant horses, and horses prone to laminitis.

Shannon John J. Moreau, DVM, assistant professor of equine science at Montana State University, and a team of researchers designed a controlled experiment to test the effect of psyllium on insulin and blood glucose in horses.

The study concluded that horses fed psyllium with their regular diet had much lower average glucose levels, as well as lower peak blood glucose levels.
