Road to Western Canadian Hunter Derby Finals, Filled With Fun!
Calgary, Alberta – It was a fun filled day at Anderson Ranch for the third day of the Rocky Mountain Classic II Tournament. The weather was perfect, kids around laughing and enjoying the atmosphere and great competition going on in all of the rings.
While normally the Grand Prix ring at any show is the main focus of the day, yesterday the focus moved to another ring at the end of the day.
Not that great competition and lots of fun wasn’t had in the Synoil Grand Prix Ring as there were two premier events that took place on that field. The first being the always exciting $10,000 HITS Parcour de Chase. Out of a field of 22 rising to the top in the Table C speed (competition against the clock with faults converted to seconds) was Shauna Cook on her talented mount Carousel’s Bling.
The course in the Sunoil Grand Prix ring changed for a different but great event that the kids were looking forward to. That was the JustWorld International Horseless Horse Show. This is an amazing event with the funds raised helping out kids in impoverished communities in third world nations.
Currently JustWorld has projects in Cambodia, Honduras and Guatemala. JustWorld contributions go directly to school supplies, operational support for school and after-school programs for children and young adults, as well as community kitchen initiatives and health centers to care for their health and nutrition. They have helped over 3,500 children and young adults with these activities.
The JustWorld International Horseless Horse Show is such a popular event at Rocky Mountain Show Jumping, featuring the Short Stirrup, Children’s Jumpers, a Mini Prix and Puissance (High Jump) competitions. Fun for all ages and welcome to any competitor.
On hand to assist were 4 JustWorld Ambassadors. Two Technical Ambassadors Phillip Rozon and the man known around the world Pedro Cebulka, and two Rider Ambassadors Irene Shkolnikov and Mackenzie Edwards. The event was sponsored by Dragon Media Group (dragonmediagroup.ca), a wonderfully creative company specializing in graphic, print and web design amongst other things.
A new JustWorld record was set for the girls high jump with the skillful Jenna Macoun at 1.48m, measured by the judge Phillip Rozon. An impressive feat as that was on foot and no horses involved. Granted she does have the genes of her parents, one being a former NHL hockey player.
A total of $450 was raised for JustWorld to help out in their projects, and the amazing Edwards family stepped in to top off the donation to be an even $1,000. Helping out people was never so much fun as at a JustWorld fund raiser.
On the serious side of things, competition was heating up in the beautiful hunter grass ring with the final stop on the road to the derby finals. This was the last qualifier in the series that is capped off with the finals next week and the prize money skyrocketing to an impressive $30,000 sponsored by Sotheby’s International Realty Canada.
At the end of the day, the champion of the 3’ 6” Greenhawk Hunter Derby was the always impressive Rodney Tulloch aboard the fabulous mare Temptation. “We purchased her in Holland 4 years ago for Paige Russell to do the Equitations and the Jumpers. Unfortunately Paige was under the weather and was not able to ride today, so I was fortunate enough to get the ride on her.” said Rodney.
“She is very honest and goes straight to the jumps and I knew that I could do all the inside turns, because she is just very careful and very quick and very clever. I thought that it was a great course, there were lots of options for inside turns to higher efforts to get larger scores” remarked Rodney. “
The excitement towards the finals is electric. “For next week in the $30,000 final, our barn as a group is so excited.” mentioned Rodney. “It is going to be so much fun and we have already been able to look at some of the new jumps and I am sure it is going to be quite spectacular and it is going to be a great time.”
In addition to the 3’ 6” Greenhawk Hunter Derby this afternoon, the grass hunter ring also was the host to the $2,000 Zoetis Junior/Amateur 3’ 0’’ Hunter Derby. Taking home the top placingwas Glory Bound with rider Deborah Boyle. . Great competition all around and such a fun day at the Rocky Mountain Show Jumping event.
Rocky Mountain Show Jumping hosts its tournaments at Anderson Ranch in Calgary’s south end, a world-class facility featuring permanent stabling for 300 horses and a grass grand prix field complete with natural obstacles.
