The RSPCA is seeking information in the case of a Shetland pony discovered in a field near Bradford, UK, with a tethering chain that had been on so long it nearly severed her head from her neck.

The pony, who has been named Susie, was reported by a passer-by who was concerned because remains of a Christmas tree had become tangled in the chain.

RSPCA officers who investigated were appalled to find that the chain had dug into the pony's skin so deeply that her life was at risk.

Horse and Hound quotes the RSPCA inspector on the case:

"When the call came in it was actually about a pony which had the debris of a Christmas tree, odd as it sounds, tangled in a chain that had been used as a tether.

"She didn't want to come anywhere near us and it took a couple of visits to catch her.

"When we finally did it became apparent that she was actually very badly injured indeed.

"Her head-collar and the chain had dug into her. The wound around her neck was so deep it had almost severed her head. It really was touch and go."

She was sedated to remove the chain and despite the high risk of infection with such a deep wound, which could not be sutured, she has survived and is making progress.

She remained in a veterinary hospital for a week and is now recovering at a boarding barn.

Investigators are requesting information from the public about who owned Susie and how they let her get in this condition.  Please call Inspector Oprysk on the RSPCA cruelty line at 0300 1234 999.
