A pony named Samson, described as "the kissing pony," will join two dogs and two animal organizations to be inducted into the New Jersey Veterinary Medical Association's 16th annual Animal Hall of Fame.

The awards will be given on March 6.

Each of the winners, chosen out of a field of over forty nominations, was judged to stand out "because of the tremendous impact that they are having on peoples lives and animal welfare."

Over eighty animals have already been inducted into the Hall of fame.  Previous winners include therapy animals, wildlife ambassadors, and medical 'sensing' animals who can monitor their owner's health and help in emergency situations.  Animals honored range from horses and Great Danes, to a Box Turtle and an African Grey Parrot.

According to a news release on prweb.com, Samson is a 12 year old Shetland Pony who visits nursing homes all over the state and gives 'kisses upon request'.  He received no special training for his job and simply has the ability to bring comfort to those who are confined to the indoors.

The other winners include a Chihuahua with no front legs who is an ambassador for the achievement of overcoming disability; an English Bulldog who visits seriously ill childhood cancer patients; a feline rescue, rehab, and rehoming facility; and a Greyhound rescue which works with incarcerated youth to socialize and train the dogs.
