Alberta Bound

(SPRUCE MEADOWS, Calgary, AB):

A Spruce Meadows charter Boeing 747 has arrived safely at Calgary International Airport with 66 horses on board. The annual Labour Day airlift from Europe went very smoothly and the horses arrived under ideal conditions at YYC prior to boarding trailers for the short transit to their stable at Spruce Meadows. The horses will now rest and acclimatize for a couple of days prior to Tuesday’s veterinary inspection and Wednesday’s start of the 2013 Spruce Meadows ‘Masters’.

Officials from Spruce Meadows, Canada Boarder Services and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency worked together closely to ensure that all protocols are respected and that the arrival and deplaning process is activated as smoothly as possible.

“This is a tremendous exercise in logistics, planning and cooperation,” said Spruce Meadows’ Ian Allison.  “This annual operation takes months of advance planning and involves a large number of people in many counties. It is an operation that must be designed to manage last minute changes to the load plan and always pay the highest regard to the passengers, the horses.”

The Boeing 747 arrival was one of three flights destined to Calgary with horses competing this week at Spruce Meadows. Flights from Luxembourg and New York have also carried horse power Alberta  bound to compete at the Spruce Meadows ‘Masters’, September 4^th - 8^th .
