SANFORD, N.C. (AP) -- Officials say 12 horses died and several others were injured when a weekend twister touched down on a Lee County ranch.

The Sanford Herald reported Monday that the horse training arena and barn at Misty Creek Ranch were destroyed.

Owner Marian Brinley says about 40 horses were on the 200-acre farm when the storm hit. Some were found underneath the wreckage, while others were killed by debris.

Brinley's home was heavily damaged. She says she and her husband escaped injury in the basement of their home.

Nearby Ovation Farm was not damaged but sent a veterinarian with sedatives and medicine to Misty Creek.

At least 21 people were killed statewide by the storm, which left a swath of destruction unmatched by any spring storm since the mid-1980s.
