Emergency Egypt Appeal

A disaster is about to unfold – unless we act now

Thousands of working horses in Egypt run the real risk of starvation in the coming months. But it doesn’t have to be like this. The Brooke has recently launched an emergency feeding programme which will save lives and livelihoods. Your donations are vital. The situation is getting worse by the day – but with your help, we can avert disaster

Working horses – the forgotten victims of Egyptian political instability
Political turmoil and outbreaks of violence have resulted in a massive drop in tourists visiting to Egypt. This, in turn, has led to a significant decrease in income for working horses and their owners. With money tight, owners are often faced with the appalling choice of whether to feed their families or give their horses enough to eat. We believe that nobody who loves horses should have to face such a cruel dilemma.

It’s been a tough year for tourist horses in Egypt
The revolution at the start of the year was difficult enough but following a quiet summer, the political turmoil has begun again. The victims are the tourist horses who stand in the desert in the hope that they get some work. But the tourists do not come and it’s the horses who suffer.

With your help, we can prevent the sufferingWe’ve been monitoring the situation closely. It continues to deteriorate. But it’s not too late to stop the suffering of the most vulnerable horses working in the tourist trade in Egypt.
Your generosity could fund:

  • A programme of supplemental feeding – so that the neediest horse owners are able to feed their horses and protect their own livelihoods.
  • Veterinary treatment – to relieve the immediate suffering of wounds, lameness and other problems.
  • Education sessions – highlighting ways in which owners can help themselves cope better and the importance of good nutrition.
  • Continuous monitoring of horse health – to prevent suffering.
Our work with other animal welfare organisations – because co-operation is vital to save these horses.
  • Working horses are suffering immense pain right now. But we can help. We can prevent the pain. Remember, horses and their owners are depending on us. Please give generously – there’s no time to spare.
*Donations will be used to fund the emergency feeding programme. Should the amount we receive exceed the amount required, donations will be used to support the Brooke’s ongoing work in Egypt.
