The Brooke is urgently following up on reports of starving and dead horses tied to a tree in Nazlet-al-Salman, 25 kilometres from the capital in Egypt.
Nasser Hosny, Egypt General Manager said the Brooke was deeply concerned by the reports and a vet team is in the area to investigate the situation and address these problems as best we can.
"Many of the roads have been closed around Cairo and owners may not have been able to reach the horses. Or they may have run out of money to feed their families and abandoned the horses." reports Mr. Hosny.
The Brooke is dedicated to helping working horses, donkeys and mules in the developing world and its Cairo clinic remains open. Staff there continue to provide treatment for animals requiring emergency care.
Dorcas Pratt, Director of International Development at the Brooke has stated: "The Brooke is in contact with its main office and clinic in Cairo, and is pleased to confirm all staff in Egypt are safe. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and once things have calmed down, one of our mobile veterinary teams will resume work in operational areas including Giza. Our dedicated vets and community animal health teams are continuing to help communities and provide services for animals, where it is practical to do so."
