Abandoned donkey Emmet finds sanctuary in Devon

A four year old donkey called Emmet who was found abandoned in Northern Ireland in February 2012 is settling in to his new home in Devon this week, thanks to The Donkey Sanctuary.

Six months after Emmet and his three friends were rescued by the international animal welfare charity, specialist care and attention has helped to put them all firmly on the road to recovery. All have gained weight and have started on a process of corrective farriery to right their neglected and overgrown hooves. The four donkeys have since been named Emmet, Ardan, Ciaran and Finbar.

Whilst are were all in very poor health when they were discovered walking cold, wet and hungry along a road in Armagh, Emmet, the youngest of the group, was a particular cause for concern. At the time of his rescue he was extremely underweight, had overgrown and twisted hooves, and his coat was matted and covered in mud.

After being declared fit enough to travel, Emmet and his friends are now settling in to a new life on one of the Sanctuary’s farms in Devon.

Emma Gill, PR Officer for The Donkey Sanctuary, was there to watch the donkeys arrive:

“Watching Emmet and his friends being unloaded off the lorry and led to the area of the farm that they could now call home, I could not believe that these were the same donkeys that I had seen looking so despondent and weak at the time of their rescue. All four seemed to have a spring in their step as they felt the grass under their trimmed hooves and set off to explore their new paddock. Their coats, which had been so matted and muddied when they were rescued, were gleaming even in the dull light of a foggy Devon day, and there was a brightness in their eyes that had definitely not been there in February.

“Returning later in the day to see how they were settling in, there was no doubt in my mind that these once desperate donkeys were now happy. In just six months, Emmet and his friends have made a fantastic recovery in the care of The Donkey Sanctuary, and I am so pleased that we have been able to provide them with a sanctuary for life.”
