Donkey charity volunteer to carry the torch

18 year old Emma McLean from Seaton, who volunteers with children with additional needs at The Donkey Sanctuary’s donkey assisted therapy in Sidmouth, has been chosen to carry the Olympic torch through Exeter on Sunday 20th May.

Aspiring doctor Emma has been helping out at The Donkey Sanctuary on Saturdays and during school holidays for over a year now, and says she really enjoys the experience:

“It is amazing to see the interaction between the children and the donkeys during donkey rides, and I have come to love the donkeys as well!  A particular favourite of mine is Rocky, who has taken to resting his head on my shoulder, which is really sweet.

“I am really pleased to have been picked to carry the Olympic torch in recognition of my volunteering.  I don’t know yet how far or where in Exeter I will be carrying the torch on 20th May, but I am looking forward to it.”

Jennie Jepperson, Centre Co-ordinator for the charity’s donkey assisted therapy centre in Sidmouth, adds:

“Emma is a really valuable member of the team and we would not be without her.  We really appreciate her giving up her time to help out with fundraising events and our regular Saturday club activities with children with additional needs.  We are proud to support her as she carries the Olympic torch next weekend.”

The Donkey Sanctuary is always keen to hear from people who would like to volunteer with either the charity’s donkey assisted therapy activities, or with the donkeys themselves.  To find out more, please visit
