Donkey Sanctuary celebrates Valentine's Day with 'Love Week'
With Valentine’s Day falling in half term this year, The Donkey Sanctuary will be hosting a week of events starting Saturday 11th February for families who love donkeys and the countryside at the charity’s headquarters in Sidmouth.
Families can take part in a Valentine-themed treasure hunt, searching for heart-shaped clues around the sanctuary and on Valentine’s Day itself people can make their own love nest for the birds in their garden. Visitors can indulge their creativity and make a love bug or create a greetings card for their favourite donkey. A special donkey delivery will be made each day, to distribute the cards to the grooms who look after the donkeys, and the top donkey recipients will be charted on the Donkey Valentine’s Vine!
James Chubb, events and activities manager at the Sanctuary says: “We’d love visitors and families to come along and join in with our half-term Love Week celebrations. We’ve developed a nest box kit so people can make a very special home for birds, complete with a bird fact sheet. February the 14th is regarded as the last day of the year you can put up a nest box and expect that it is used the same spring so it’s the perfect time to come along and put your craft skills to the test.”
The Love Week craft activities will be available during each day of the half-term holidays, with donations towards the cost of materials greatly appreciated.
The Sanctuary is open from 9am until dusk with no charge for parking or admission for people to visit and find out about the ongoing work of the charity in providing sanctuary for donkeys and mules both here in the UK and around the world.
