Flood survivor Rose blossoms in charity's care

Amid fear of further flooding, The Donkey Sanctuary carried out an emergency pick-up of a 14 year old donkey called Rose whose mother had drowned in flash floods in Hoff, Cumbria at the end of September.  Rose’s distraught owner asked the charity to take her in to ensure her safety.

With many areas of the country still reeling from recent flooding and more wet weather forecast, the international animal welfare charity is glad that their latest rescue will be safe, warm and dry whatever the weather this winter.

Niels Kristensen, the charity’s welfare officer involved in Rose’s rescue, explains:

“When we received the phone call from Rose’s owner asking for help we knew that we needed to act quickly.  Not only was it possible that water levels could rise again putting Rose’s life in grave danger, but the stress of her ordeal could put her at risk of a potentially life-threatening condition called hyperlipaemia.  We took Rose to our nearby holding base where she was checked over by a vet and made warm and comfortable while we kept a close eye on her.

“The turmoil of her lucky escape, the loss of her mother and a change of surroundings were bound to put her off kilter for a while, but we were delighted to see Rose’s appetite returning to normal within a few days and her friendly character starting to shine through.  We are so glad that after everything she has been through, we are able to give Rose a safe and secure future ahead with The Donkey Sanctuary.”
