Foster donkeys at Her Majesty’s pleasure

Two donkeys who had a difficult start in life are to be stabled at Her Majesty’s pleasure from this week, when they check in to the Young Offenders Institute in Warrington.

The two young donkeys, named Joey and Jasper (both aged 4), came into the care of international animal welfare charity The Donkey Sanctuary in early 2011, when concerns were raised about their overgrown hooves and general body condition whilst at their previous home.  The pair, who have grown in health and confidence during their time with The Donkey Sanctuary, are the latest to be rehomed by the Warrington Young Offenders Institute, which has been fostering donkeys through the charity for more than 18 years.

Joey and Jasper will become the latest additions to the Institute’s farm, which also houses goats and hens.  Once there, they will be cared for by both staff and young people, who really benefit from the one-to-one interaction with the animals.  The Donkey Sanctuary carries out donkey care courses at the Institute several times a year to help the young people improve their knowledge and skills.

Michael Crane, Head of Welfare for The Donkey Sanctuary, explains:

“It is really inspiring to see these donkeys, who themselves have been rehabilitated after their difficult start in life, having a positive impact on the rehabilitation of young people with troubled backgrounds.

“The Donkey Sanctuary’s foster scheme finds loving homes for donkeys in our care who would benefit from the kind of one-one-one attention that they can provide. Donkeys are carefully matched with prospective homes to ensure a happy future for both donkeys and foster owners.  Having seen how well our donkeys have been cared for at the Young Offenders Institute over the last 18 years, I have no doubt that Joey and Jasper will soon be thriving in their new environment.”
