Free Derbyshire Donkey Sanctuary open day over Diamond Jubilee weekend

International animal welfare charity The Donkey Sanctuary’s Derbyshire Centre, situated in Flagg near Buxton, is hosting a FREE open day over the Diamond Jubilee weekend for members of the public to visit its adorable rescued and unwanted donkeys. 

Visitors can meet the staff and get ‘hands on’ with the donkeys on Sunday 3 June between 10am – 4pm. There will be hot drinks and refreshments available and donkey-related goods for sale, along with showings of The Donkey Sanctuary’s film describing the charity’s work worldwide.

Chris Pile who runs the centre says: “Why not make the most of your extended weekend and spend some quality time with our rescued donkeys? They really enjoy all the extra fuss and attention and it is a great opportunity for visitors to find out more about our work – it’s a lovely day for all.   This is always a great day out for the family and a great way to spend the Diamond Jubilee weekend.”

The Derbyshire Centre provides permanent refuge to a small number of donkeys who are elderly or have long-term medical conditions.  Other donkeys are provided with respite care until they are fit enough to travel to the main Sanctuary in Sidmouth, Devon. An on-site training centre provides a choice of courses in donkey care and welfare.

The centre is open to the public six times per year and hosts regular training courses for donkey owners.
