Lung scan sees Rupert firmly on the road to recovery

Staff at The Donkey Sanctuary are delighted with lung scan results that confirm that a young donkey who was critically ill when he was rescued in June is making a good recovery from a severe respiratory condition that made it difficult for him to breathe.

The recent lung scan results tell a much improved story from when Rupert was first rescued.  When he first came into the care of international animal welfare charity The Donkey Sanctuary, Rupert was so desperately ill that it was touch and go whether he would make it through the night.  He was underweight, despondent and visibly struggling to breathe as the result of a serious respiratory infection

As it was initially too dangerous for Rupert to travel to one of the Sanctuary’s farms, Rupert’s recovery began at a local veterinary practice, where he was given antibiotics to combat his condition and was fed through a stomach tube.  Once Rupert had regained his strength, his rapid breathing had returned to a more normal rate and his condition was no longer critical, Rupert was moved to The Donkey Sanctuary’s centre in Flagg, Derbyshire.

This latest news from the vets is the outcome that staff caring for Rupert had been hoping for.  Chris Pile, manager of The Donkey Sanctuary’s Derbyshire centre, says:

“We are really pleased with Rupert’s progress, we have seen a real improvement in the time that he has been in our care and are thrilled that the lung scan results confirm that he is on the mend.  His white blood cell count has also returned to normal after his respiratory infection so he no longer needs to be on any medication.  We will continue to keep a close eye on him, but are hopeful that he will soon be able to join a group of donkeys on the farm and make new friends.”
