Six months of shocking shorts for donkey charity

Wayne Taylor has passed the halfway point of his pledge to wear ‘unbelievably shocking shorts’ to work every day in the six months leading up to Christmas – all to raise money to provide donkey assisted therapy to children with additional needs in the Leeds area.

26 year old Wayne from Halifax, who works as an upholstery finisher, took up the challenge in the summer to support the work of The Donkey Sanctuary’s Donkey Assisted Therapy centre in Eccup, Leeds.  He has so far raised £350 for the centre, which provides donkey assisted therapy to 190 local children with additional needs from Leeds and the surrounding area each week.

Wayne says: “It all started in June when a friend challenged me to wear shorts every day until Christmas.  I decided that I would go one step further and wear unbelievably shocking shorts to work and ask people to sponsor me to do so for six months.  I chose The Donkey Sanctuary’s Donkey Assisted Therapy centre in Leeds as I have always loved donkeys and think that the benefits of donkey therapy for children with additional needs are just amazing. I knew that others who had not previously heard of the work of the centre would be equally impressed, and am hoping to raise £500 for this great cause by the time Christmas comes around.”

Cathryn Williams, centre manager for The Donkey Sanctuary in Leeds, says: “We all think Wayne is very brave to carry out his ‘shocking shorts’ mission, not only for the strange looks he must get from co-workers and customers, but also considering that Yorkshire is not known for its tropical temperatures!  We are delighted that he has chosen The Donkey Sanctuary as the recipient of funds that he raises through this venture and send him warm wishes to see him through the cold months ahead. Wayne’s generous gesture will enable more children with additional needs to benefit from donkey assisted therapy at our Eccup centre.”
