Three horses have been put down after suffering injuries during non-betting steeplechase races held at the Saratoga Race Course annual open house.
The injuries occurred separately in each of the first three races during last weekend's 32nd-annual event. Two of the horses were injured on the flat, while the third was injured over a hurdle.
Non-wagering steeplechase and flat course races have been part of the open house festivities for years at the track, which is run by the New York Racing Association.
The track opens its 144th thoroughbred racing season on Friday.
