British Teams Announced For
November 25 USPA International Cup
Wellington, FL-The Hurlingham Polo Association, governing body for polo in the United Kingdom, has announced its men's and women's rosters for the International Polo Cup pitting England against Team USA, Sunday, November 25th at Grand Champions Polo Club.
The 20-goal championship game will feature some of the top players from England and the U.S. in the United States Polo Association and HPA-sanctioned international tournament.
The men's players for England are Jack Richardson, ranked at 4 goals; Max Routledge, 5 goals; Tom Morley, 6; and Richard Le Poer, 5.
Morley, 30, is one of England's top polo players and will serve as team captain. Morley mentored the 20-year-old Richardson, one of England's up-and-coming players. Richardson was voted the Julius Baer Victor Ludorum Most Outstanding Young Player award at the Audi Awards, polo's version of the Oscars.
"You have to keep eating away at it, trying to stay well-mounted and hoping you provide good value on your handicap," Richardson said at the awards ceremony.
A women's seven-goal game will be held at 1 p.m. featuring some of the top women's players in the world.
The women's roster for England is Hazel Jackson, Sarah Wiseman and Claire Donnelly, all rated at 1 goal and team captain Nina Vestey Clarkin, rated at 4 goals and regarded as the world's top women's player.
Clarkin, 30, is the first and only female player ever to win the prestigious Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup at Cowdray Park and was a member of the winning team in the European Championships in Spain. She was formerly ranked at 5 goals. She is married to John-Paul Clarkin, captain of the New Zealand polo team.
"The fact that there is separate ladies' polo is good for polo," said Vestey Clarkin. "Women's play is different because there are natural limitations. Passes aren't as long but it's more aggressive than the mixed game."
Marc and Melissa Ganzi of Wellington will host the holiday weekend event and compete in the games.
Melissa Ganzi, board member and vice president of the Board of Directors for the museum, said all proceeds will benefit the National Museum of Polo and Hall of Fame in Lake Worth and its expansion plans for a new annex.
