Does anyone have a natural bug spray recipe?
What kind of bug spray do you use and find most effective?

I work for Greenhawk when I'm in Canada, so I hear a lot of opinions, and I have a horse who has allergies to bug bites so I have tried them all. In my opinion, nothing really works that well, but I still use a spray to make myself feel as if I'm doing everything I can. There is an all natural, nontoxic one that comes in a green bottle with a name that has "green" in it. It doesn't seem to be any worse than anything else.

The Greenhawk I work at is Mohawk Raceway, which is a very international community, and a common comment is that American sprays work better/longer than ours because they have an oil base whereas our Canadian ones all have a water base. The only Canadian repellant I've found with an oil base is Bronco roll-on, which is NOT all natural. I always have some of this on hand for areas she can't reach.

I don't like to put a fly mask on Amber because it itches her so badly she will rub her face on fence posts until it bleeds. So I really need something around her eyes and ears. I find that SWAT is the most effective thing. It's main active ingredient is balsum, so I guess it's not really terrible, but it's not touted as natural or nontoxic.
I live in Michigan USA and we are able to buy both water based and oil based bug protection products.
There are several products that claim to be natural but I'm looking for something to mix myself. I have used a mix with Avon's Skin SO Soft among other things and I know some people use an Apple Cider based mixture but I don't have the full recipes. There's also some based with Citronela oil.
I haven't found anything that works very well for over a few hours. So something natural that works for a few hours would satisfy me.
How is the 'coming home' countdown progressing. I got distracted...bet you didn't!!
No, I didn't! It's down to 41.
OH! my good friend has a few....let me bug her for them and get back to you!
omg, i just realized the 'pun' in my last post! lmao!
ok, off to txt her for recipies...
I use "Equiderma" Neem and Aloe fly spray, by Telessis. I have been getting it from a distributor in Ontario, but he is moving on to other things (training and tack), so once his supply is gone, that's it - I'll have to look for another Canadian distributor for it. It is natural and was developed in the Florida Everglades. It smells absolutely wonderful. It seems to work well, from what I've seen of it. It's hard to know, because I board my horse, so I'd spray it on and eventually have to leave before too many bugs came out as it got darker outside (it did seem to work on those nasty little no-see-ums that hang around her ears all day).

I did make a homemade fly spray last year. It was oil based (I think I used olive oil or sunflower oil) and I had to heat it up and add a bunch of herbs to it. You let it sit for 24 hours and then take out the herbs and put the oil in a spray bottle. It was pretty greasy, as you can imagine, and didn't spray all that well (perhaps it was the cheap dollar-store sprayer I was using?). I do have another recipe in which you just add essential oils to water (eucalyptus oil, peppermint, etc.). I might try that one if I can't get the Equiderma anymore.
