I think dentistry is becoming enlightened in much of the animal world ~ speaking from a care perpective. Proper dental care can prevent a lot illnesses or even colic, prolong life and make animals happier by relieving discomfort.

I finally found a dentist for my Filly after a long search. She's coming 4 and starting training again soon. I need to make sure her mouth is ready.

Anyone else have difficulty finding a dentist? Does you dentist power float or float by hand?

Hi Lise - glad you found an equine dentist. I found this thread on Twitter. Visit my site, especially the FAQ section and let me know if you have any questions. Geoff Tucker, DVM www.theequinepractice.com
It's amazing the difference proper denistry can make in a riding horse ~ unbelievable. And I really appreciate professionals ~ beit coaches or DVM as yourself, who can pnipoint a problem.

I took my young BIg FIlly to a Pro for a lesson. We were doing w/t/c and my Filly was being SOOOO good. But the pro picked up that whe was 'just not quite as giving' on one side. The first thing she said for me to do was get her teeth checked. The following week she had two really nasty premolar caps removed. The Vet who saw her, since retired :( ~ said she was probably in a lot of discomfort. Of course being the lovely mare she is ~ she didn't get too dramatic about it.

Situations like this make me so sensitive to horse behaviour, and 'listening' to them. A few times, the week prior to going to the Pro barn ~ my mare lifted her head when I bridled her. Nothing dramatic ~ just never really did that before,as normally she opens her mouth and pushes in. She was tellin gme ~ I just wasn't listening.

Well I'm starting her up again after having the winter off as a pasture puff. She's going well in the long lines and her dentuist is due to visit next week. Hope it goes well! I'll post when she's done.
