Debbie McDonald's Olympic and World Cup mount, Brentina, has had her first foal through embryo transfer. The colt, born on April 28, weighed 150 pounds and is black with two hind socks and no other white markings. The colt was sired by Damsey, a Hanoverian stallion by Dressage Royal (Donnerhall and Rubenstein) owned by Doug and Louise Leatherdale. Brentina, also Hanoverian by Brentano II, is owned by Peggy and Parry Thomas of Hailey, Idaho.
Brentina, now 19 years old, had a remarkable career with McDonald. They won both a team and individual gold medal at the Pan Am Games in 1999. At the World Equestrian games they earned team silver medal in 2002 plus team bronze in 2008. She won the gold medal at the World Cup in 2003 and bronze in 2005. At the Athens Olympics, they were on the team that brought home the Bronze medal. Brentina also won numerous Grands prix and national championship titles.
Her second embryo transfer foal is expected in the next few weeks. The second foal was sired by Kingston, Leslie Morse's Dutch Warmblood stallion by Voltaire.
The photo below shows Brentina's retirement ceremony at the Las Vegas World Cup finals in 2009.
She was a crowd favorite and much beloved by audiences - at the 2005 finals, she and McDonald brought the crowd to their feet cheering and clapping in time to their "Respect" musical freestyle.
