Erin Josey & UQ AnapavlovaMay 10, 2010 — Erin Josey of Dartmouth, NS, paired with Hannah Biggs of Great Britain, won the team bronze medal for Team Commonwealth at the Sydney CDI 3*/CDI–Y International Dressage Derby being held in Sydney, Australia, April 28–May 1, 2010. The event, hosted at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre at Horsley Park, site of the 2000 Olympic Games, is the only CDI3* held in Australia each year.
Due to Australian's strict quarantine requirements and the high cost of air transportation, the organizing committee invited owners to loan their Prix St Georges/Intermediaire I level horses to the visiting international riders. At the competition, all riders started on equal terms, drawing the name of the horse they competed on out of a hat.
Josey, who currently lives, rides and trains at Oxford Ridge Stable in Kemptville, ON, competed in the Needs For Steeds International Prix St Georges and Riders Shoppe Intermediaire I classes aboard Connie Bookless’ 12-year-old Australian Warmblood mare, UQ Anapavlova.
All the competitors then drew new mounts to compete in the Gow-Gates International Prix St Georges Derby. Josey, riding Zest for Life, Jane Toohey’s 15-year-old Thoroughbred gelding, finished in fifth place. Biggs, Josey teammate, placed in sixth place riding Pinnamurra Ricardo, Maxine Cummings’ 14-year-old Palomino gelding.
The combined scores of Josey and Biggs totaled 119.368, which earned them the team bronze medal. The gold medal went to the host country, Australia, with a score of 123.158, and silver was awarded to New Zealand (120.421). Fourth place went to Japan with a score of 118.263.
“It was a wonderful experience, I am so happy that I was allowed this opportunity to represent Canada at the Sydney CDI. The owners of the horses we rode need to be thanked over and over again for allowing a complete stranger a ride on horse in a competition is the nicest thing you could do. Without these owners I would not have been allowed this opportunity,” said Josey. “I learned so much about myself at this competition—weaknesses I need to improve on and where I want to see my riding and coaching career go. Thank you to Dressage Canada and Equine Canada for choosing me to go to the Sydney CDI.”
