Canadian Reining Team is Ready for the World Equestrian Games

Ottawa, ON—The Canadian Reining Team, comprised of Lisa Coulter of Princeton, BC, Duane Latimer of Bienfait, SK, Shawna Sapergia and Vernon Sapergia, both of Cochrane, AB, is ready to compete at the 2010 Altech FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG) to be held in Lexington, KY September 25—October 10, 2010.
The Reining competition, which will be held from September 25–30, will start with the Team competition running on September 25 and 26. On the 28th, Qualifying competition will be held, and the last day, September 30th, will have the much anticipated Individual Final and a Freestyle exhibition. All the Reining events will be held in the Indoor Arena at the Kentucky Horse Park.
Coulter will be riding Western Whiz, a seven-year-old Quarter Horse gelding owned by Robert Thompson. Latimer, the current FEI Reining World Champion, will be looking to defend his title riding Dun Playin Tag, Lance Griffin’s Canadian-bred six-year-old Quarter Horse gelding. Shawna Sapergia will be riding This Chics On Top, a Canadian-bred seven-year-old Quarter Horse mare owned by Outrider Ranch Ltd. Vernon Sapergia will be riding Its Wimpys Turn, a six-year-old Canadian-bred Quarter horse mare also owned by Outrider Ranch Ltd.
In addition to the riders, the Canadian Reining Team also consists of some very valuable members including chef d’équipe, Wendy Dyer of Keswick, ON; assistant chef d’équipe and team coach, JP Forget, of Whitesboro, TX; team veterinarian Dr. Wayne Burwash of Burwash Equine Services in Calgary, AB; and team manager, Wendy Gayfer from Equine Canada.
"I'm excited about being part of the team. I very much look forward to working with all the other people involved in upholding Canada's strong international reining heritage," said Forget.
“Since reining became an official FEI discipline, I have served as the FEI Veterinary Delegate, overseeing the health and welfare of all the horses, at many of the major reining competitions in North American,” said Dr. Burwash. “However, this is the first time I have served specifically as the team veterinarian for the Canadian Reining Team. We have a very strong team, and I am honored to be asked to go to Kentucky.”
