Champions’ Welcome “World Cup” at Spruce Meadows

(SPRUCE MEADOWS, Calgary, AB): With many of the world’s best now on site at Spruce Meadows for the 2010 Spruce Meadows “Masters”, Sunday will allow them their first opportunity to test the championship waters in the inaugural Champions’ Welcome FEI World Cup Grand Prix.

The event will provide a wonderful preview and preparation for the $2 million Spruce Meadows “Masters” which begins Wednesday, September 8th.

“We have found in recent years that many of our athletes arrive well in advance of the “Masters”, so we felt it would provide a nice opportunity if they had a chance to prepare in a high level environment”, says Spruce Meadows president, Linda Southern-Heathcott. “We applied to the FEI for a World Cup and were granted permission. The event will be held on the Meadow on the Green, which is a marvellous venue but won’t allow for any competitive advantage for those who haven’t arrived yet for the “Masters.”

To date horses from Canada , the United States , Ireland , Venezuela , Switzerland , Great Britain , Mexico , the Netherlands and Belgium have arrived by land and air in advance of next week’s “Masters”. For those that feel they need a final opportunity to prepare for the sport’s biggest stage, the $55,000 Spruce Meadows Champions’ Welcome FEI World Cup awaits. Some of the sport’s biggest names will be chasing coveted World Cup points and a chance to start strong at Spruce Meadows tomorrow.

Competition begins Sunday, September 5th at 2:00pm.
