The widely reported story of a publicity stunt involving a donkey that was launched into the air attached to a para-sail and towed by a boat from a tourist resort beach in southern Russia generated outrage around the world.  Media outlets all over Europe and the Americas, as well as India, Turkey and Ghana carried outraged reports on the ill-conceived stunt.  Seventy-five-year-old French actress and animal rights crusader, Brigitte Bardot was reported to have written a letter to the region's prosecutor requesting action be taken in the case.

At the time of the first reports, there was no information given regarding the condition of the donkey following its ordeal.  However, local police investigated and tracked down the donkey - an eighteen year old female named Anapka.  Despite witness's accounts of a rough landing in the water, Anapka was examined by a veterinarian and reported to be healthy.  The laws in that area require that an animal must be severely injured or dead to file criminal charges, so there will be no case brought against the owner of the donkey or the individuals who carried out the stunt.

Meanwhile, The Sun Tabloid in London has moved Anapka to a new location and their 'rescue team' arranged for her care.  They promise that Anapka will never undergo such an ordeal again, and are looking into the possibility of moving her to England.

Another public figure, British football (soccer) Tottenham Spurs team manager Harry Redknapp, expressed his disgust at the stunt and offered a home for the donkey if or when she could be moved to England.   He intends to establish an animal sanctuary near his home in Hampshire.

So now it looks like Anapka will get a well deserved retirement and will not be used for any future publicity stunts - at least none that involve para-sailing.
