Lexington, KY—Canadian Para-Dressage riders wrapped up competition at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG) held in Lexington, KY, with the Freestyle test, which took place October 8–10th, 2010.

Canada’s first participant in the Freestyle was Tara Kowalski of Chilliwack, BC. Riding Philippa Keegan’s 19-year-old Anglo-Arabian mare bred by MJ Farms, Kowalski earned a score of 59.950% for 15th place overall in Grade 1a.

In the Grade 2 Freestyle, Lauren Barwick of Aldergrove, BC and her horse Maile, a 16-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare, earned a score of 74.500 % for fourth place, just 0.45% away from the bronze medal score.

“Maile gave everything she had in my Freestyle. I came into WEG happy that we were here riding. Her fitness was down because both of us had separate accidents. She gave it her all, and I could not have asked for anything more,” said Barwick. “To be here as part of the Canadian Team has been wonderful as usual. Everyone has pulled together as a team to get all the riders here, and I have had a fabulous groom, personal assistant and coach.”

In 12th place in the Grade 2 Freestyle test, with a score of 67.850%, was Sharon Buffitt of Pointe-Claire, QC, riding Gitane d´Aubrac, Ecurie d’Aubrac’s 11-year-old Canadian Warmblood mare.

“After my first two movements both of us just settled in and we had a great test,” said Buffitt. “Being at WEG had been a fantastic experience. I loved being here with such a great team—our support staff and coaches have been a great help. They have made this competition very memorable.”

Jennifer McKenzie of Maple Ridge, BC, and Sunbury Lodge Voodoo, a 15-year-old Australian Warmblood gelding owned by Violet McKenzie, finished in 16th place with a score of 65.750% in their Freestyle Test.

“My Freestyle was very good. Attending WEG has been the most wonderful experience I have ever had. I appreciate everything that everyone has done for me. I can’t thank them enough,” said McKenzie.

In the Grade 1B Freestyle Test, Ashley Gowanlock of Vancouver, BC, and Alexander (Sandy) Mitchell’s Donnymaskell, an 11-year-old Hanoverian gelding, received a score of 67.050 % for eighth place.

“My horse was very under control during our Freestyle. He was with me in the ring, which was very, very exciting. I had a partner and we were working together,” said Gowanlock. “These Games have been the best international event I have ever attended.”

Finishing in 11th place with a score of 69.500% in the Grade 4 Freestyle test was Madison Lawson of Bonfield, ON with her horse McGuire, a 13-year-old Canadian Sport Horse gelding.

“I am very pleased that I received 70% from three judges today. My WEG experience has just been fantastic and very positive,” said Lawson.

Rounding out the Canadian riders in Grade 4 was Eleonore Elstone of Langley, BC, and Why Not G, a seven-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by Elstone and Kelleigh Kulscar. The pair finished in 13th place with a score of 68.550%.

“My horse really wanted to go for the extensions both in the trot and the canter. We just need to get more mileage to prepare for London 2012,” said Elstone.

Andrea Taylor, the National Team Coach, added “Because everyone worked so hard—chef d’équipe, grooms, trainers—and came together as a team, this, for me, has been the best experience. It has allowed me focus and do my job with Mary Longdon working beside me. I am very proud of all the Canadian riders and how consistent they were in the ring.”

“Overall, we are very pleased with the results. Some of our more novice horses and riders at this international competition have really risen to the occasion—especially Eleonore with her every young horse and Madison as our youngest rider. Our coaching staff has been fantastic. We just got everything out of our horses and riders at these Games,” said Elizabeth Quigg-Robinson, chef d’équipe of the Canadian Para-Dressage Team. “I don’t think we could have done better. Our only disappointment is a missed medal by 0.45% for Lauren and Maile, but that was due the fact that she was unable to ride her horse for a period leading up to the Games due to injuries to both herself and her horse.”

“Special thanks have to go to Amie O'Shaughnessy, the manager of Para-Equestrian at Equine Canada. Because of her, my job has been made so much easier,” added Quigg-Robinson.
