In the second day opener at Cannes, the winners line up was full of names familiar to regular followers of the Global Champions Tour.
Vonka A has won and been placed in several tour classes including her recent win in Valencia. Today she was steered to a 6400 Euro victory in efficient style by her regular partner, Daniel Deusser, who declared that "I think I had I had a pretty good ride to be honest, it would be difficult to say if i could have gone faster if I had had to."
In second was another regular pair on the GCT speed podium, AD Norson and Alvaro de Miranda who were less than a second slower. In third was last night's winner Kamal Bahamdam and Pinochetta.
Tonight's second class was also against the clock and course designer Serge Houtmann was no easier on the riders in this one than he had been in the first. However the results of this class were much more to the liking of the home crowd.
An early lead was taken by Oliver Desutter with Aranka in a time of 62.58 which held for some time until Irishman Billy Twomey and Tinka's Serenade blasted round in 61.82.
At this point there were still 16 horses left to jump and the French crowd's hopes of a home win looked slight when neither Roger Yves Bost, Patrice Delaveau nor Julian Epaillard could come home quite quick enough. But the very last man to jump saved the day for France. This is beginning to look like Kevin Staut's trademark.
Previously Kevin had said that the stallion Major de Cockerie needed to learn to go against the clock and after a couple of good placings in Turin, the horse has taken his lessons to heart. Without appearing to really gallop, the clock stopped at 61.38. To say the crowd went wild would be an understatement!
Kevin is very keen on the prospects of this horse for the future. “To be honest he has everything, scope, a careful jump and a good attitude, I am very excited about him and the holiday to Mauritius (part of the prize) will be nice!”
