East Dorset, VT – Hillary Dobbs of Sussex, NJ, topped the $10,000 Open Jumper High Score Awards, Presented by Sir Ruly, Inc., at the 2010 Vermont Summer Festival held July 7 to August 15 in East Dorset, VT.
Dobbs’ numerous winning performances with her mount, Marengo, put her in the race for the $10,000 Open Jumper High Score Awards, and her result on the final day of competition, a second place finish in the $50,000 Vermont Summer Celebration Grand Prix, placed Dobbs at the top of the leader board. With a total of 150 points accumulated throughout the Vermont Summer Festival, Dobbs earned $5,000 in bonus money awarded at the end of the six-week competition.
The Open Jumper High Score Awards took on special meaning this year. The award’s creator, Raul ‘Ruly’ Torano, lost his battle with cancer on May 14. The $10,000 Open Jumper High Score Awards, Presented by Sir Ruly, Inc., now serve as a legacy and reminder of Torano’s generosity and commitment to show jumping excellence, at the Vermont Summer Festival and to the sport as a whole.

“Whenever you think of Vermont you automatically associate it with Ruly and the Torano family,” said Dobbs. “It is a great thing that they are continuing to offer the awards, and whenever we think of these awards we are also thinking of him. I am honored to have won it this year.”
Torano’s nephew, Jimmy Torano of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, who had topped the standings in 2007 and 2008, earned 145 points this year to claim the second place bonus of $3,000. Jimmy Torano’s wife, Danielle, joked that if Jimmy had managed his schedule better, he might still be on top. Torano had double booked himself and was judging at the Menlo Park Horse Show during the final week of competition, giving Dobbs the opportunity to overtake him in the standings.
Last year’s winner, Darragh Kenny of Ireland who rides for Missy Clark and John Brennan of North Run Stables in Warren, VT, placed third in the standings with 131 points this year to win a $2,000 cash bonus.
Riders earned points by placing in the top eight of Level 7 Open Speed classes, Level 8 Open Jumper classes, and the Open Jumper Welcome Stake classes. In each Sunday’s grand prix event, points were awarded to the top 12 finishers.
The 2010 Vermont Summer Festival, held for its 18th year at Harold Beebe Farm in East Dorset, offered over $750,000 in prize money throughout the six weeks of competition, making it the richest sporting event in the state. In 2011, the Vermont Summer Festival will again offer six weeks of competition from July 6 to August 14. For more information, including full results, please visit
