The BBC is reporting that two horses' manes and tails were cut-off in an assault which took place last weekend.  The horses are located east of Gateshead, near Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

There was another attack nearby in which a foal was found dead with the tail partially removed.  

There was no speculation on the reason for such an odd and violent attack.  

Police were requesting any information from witnesses.
