Two Nevada men received six-month jail sentences for shooting and killing five wild horses last November. Despite their lawyers' pleas for no jail-time, the judge sentenced each man to six months in prison with a year of supervision after they are released.
The men were first arrested in April and plead innocent to charges, but
in June, changed their pleas to guilty. Sentencing was postponed from
September to allow attorneys time to prepare arguments.
Todd Davis, 44, and Joshua Keathley, 36, had been drinking when they
decided to set some traps in the Buckhorn wild horse management area.
They came across a band of approximately eight to ten horses and first
Keathley, then Davis fired at the animals. They wounded or killed five
horses and left them there without checking their condition. Keathley
picked up the rifle cartridges when they left the scene.
According to the TriCityHerald.com, the defense attorneys argued that the men had been drunk and "stupid," but the judge answered that drunk and "boneheaded" is no excuse for such senseless behavior and that six months in prison should give the men some time to think about what they had done.
