The driver of a large tractor-trailer rig loaded with horses fell asleep at the wheel which led to a serious accident when the trailer flipped onto its side.

The crash took place early in the morning on a major turnpike.  Of the estimated 30 horses in the trailer, 3 had to be put down on the spot and it was reported that a dozen had died in the accident.  Many of the survivors were injured.

Commuters helped round up the loose surviving horses and it took hours for enough trailers to arrive to haul them away.

The truck driver was not injured.
