Yummy Yummy Italia in Burnley, northern England, is serving zebra as the newest topping on their pizzas.
The new pizza topping was launched by owner Arash Fard, 33 after he visited London and saw frogs’ legs pizzas on the menu, according to local newspaper the Lancashire Telegraph.
Fard's zebra creation is not his first time experimenting with ingredients. He told the Lancashire Telegraph that his range of buffalo, venison, kangaroo and crocodile pizzas were a big hit with customers since they went on sale earlier this year.
The unusual meat toppings are bought from "alternative meats" supplier Kezie, which says the ingredients are ethically sourced from responsible farms. The zebra is reportedly from game parks in South Africa and is certified to EU food standards.
If given the choice between beef, chicken or zebra pizza, Fard said he’d go with a slice of the zebra pizza.
“It’s tastier. It tastes like beef, but slightly sweeter, and it’s healthier as well. It’s got less cholesterol.”
Local wildlife campaigners were angered by the fast-food joint's decision, branding it "immoral."
Brian Jackson from the East Lancashire branch of charity Friends of the Earth, told the newspaper, “Zebra may not be on the endangered list but it is not exactly common Going for things like zebra is encouraging the destruction of rare wildlife.”
The announcement of zebra pizza comes just days after it was announced that the restaurant L’Escargot Bleu would be the first restaurant in the UK to serve horsemeat.
