SAUGERTIES, NY (September 20, 2010)--Eighth grade soccer player Hayley Wilkinson scored a major goal at the 2010 Marshall & Sterling League National Finals on Saturday afternoon, when she was named Champion in the Children's Hunter Pony Division aboard Rain Date at HITS-on-the-Hudson, in Saugerties, New York.
Wilkinson (Sheffield, Massachusetts) and Rain Date finished first out of 70 pairs that competed in the Children's Hunter division. They won one over fences class and were fourth in the hack, which helped to fuel their drive to the Children's Hunter Pony Champion title. Reserve Champion went to Asgard Mercury, owned and shown by Samantha Cohen (New York, New York).
"It feels really exciting," said Wilkinson. "I have shown Rain Date here at HITS Saugerties a bunch of times this year and he has been great."
"Hayley is wonderful to work with," said trainer Theresa Lamothe. "She has a super pony and it's been a tremendous year for them."
The Children's Hunter Horse Champion went to Diligere, owned by John Brandow, and ridden by Sarah Brandow (New York, New York). The horse-and-rider team was first in Friday's jumping class and fourth in the under saddle en route to capturing this year's tri-color ribbon. Reserve Champion honors went to Egotistic, owned and shown by Brandilyn Wall (New Egypt, New Jersey), who won the over fences class on Saturday.
At the conclusion of the hunter divisions, the Grand Hunter Champion Award was presented to If You Say So and Kate Milton. Milton (Locust Valley, New York), who is a professional rider at Long Island's Fletcher Farm, rode Valerie Primavera's Amateur Owner horse to a pair of blue ribbons in both over fences classes in the Adequan Hunter en route to being named the Grand Hunter Champion at the 2010 Marshall & Sterling League National Finals. Milton and If You Say So earned 21 points to win this year's title.
"I just want to thank Nancy (Fletcher, owner of Fletcher Farm) for letting me ride such great horses," said Milton.
There was a tie for Reserve Grand Hunter Champion between Espero, owned by Ronny Lipitz-Mehrberg, who was Champion in the HITS 2'6" Hunter Division, and Spring Fling, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Caristo, who was Reserve Champion in the Adequan Hunter Division. Both horses were ridden by Jenny Fischer (Montgomery, New York) and each earned 16 points to gain the Grand Hunter Reserve Champion honors.
