Thursday: Canada Day was celebrated at Spruce Meadows with the opening day of the “Canada One” Tournament. There were 33 entries in the 1.50m Cargill Cup. It was the New Zealand National Anthem that was played at the end of the competition, as Guy Thomas won his first FEI competition at Spruce Meadows.
The course was designed by American, Anthony D’Ambrosio. The time was tight, at 74 seconds, over a course that spanned 490 metres, with 16 jumping efforts. Only two joined Thomas in the jump-off, Brazil’s Rodrigo Pessoa, and Will Simpson of the United States.
It was elite company for Thomas, Olympic and World Cup champions are never easy to beat. Pessoa was the first to go, clearing the course and setting a time to beat at 41.66 seconds. “I thought I had a shot, maybe I could beat Rodrigo this year after he beat me last year,” commented Thomas.
The odds of victory for improved for Thomas as he watched Simpson pull a rail, taking himself out of the running. Knowing what he had to do, Thomas set off into the ring with his 10 year-old Holstein stallion, Peterbilt.
With the quicker intermediate time all Thomas had to do was hold on. Pressing across the finish line the pair came home in a time of 40.26 seconds, edging out Pessoa for the win. “It’s pretty awesome,” said Thomas after his win in the Cargill Cup.

Friday: It wasn’t a pretty win but Leslie Howard of the United States will take it. The 2010 edition of the Duncan Ross Cup will certainly be remembered after a tough first round and a wild jump-off.
There were 32 horse/rider combinations to take on the 1.45m Anthony D’Ambrosio (USA), designed course. It featured 16 jumping efforts over 530 metres with a time allowed of 80 seconds. It was a tough test for the international entry that featured Olympic, World and World Cup champions.
Only two were able to master the difficult course to move on to the jump-off round, Howard and Canada’s Yann Candele. Candele would be the first to take on the jump-off with his 10 year-old Belgian Warmblood gelding, Azzaro Van’T Hagenhof.
The jump-off course was fairly unassuming, with 8 jumping efforts, over a course of 300 metres. Candele took off around the course with speed. To beat the Queen of Speed, you can’t play it safe. Perhaps safety would have been better as Candele fell off at fence 4a, possibly handing the victory to Howard. All Howard had to do was stay on, but Raimond W had other plans, stopping at that same fence 4a. “He hit the second fence and he’s so careful that I knew we were in trouble,” said Howard. “So I started madly kicking, so he got mad at me and stopped.”
The pair managed to put their differences aside, but not without penalty, coming home in a time of 74.66 seconds with 38 jumping faults. If all she had to do was stay on, Howard managed, but did not make it look easy in tonight’s Duncan Ross Cup.
