Little Milton Jumps Big

(SPRUCE MEADOWS, Calgary, AB): It was the RBC Cup that got things going at the Spruce Meadows “Oktoberfest” Tournament today. Young against old, rookies versus veterans, was the theme for the 1.40 metre competition. Finding herself at a new level of competition tonight was Okotoks Jasmine Wiggins. Wiggins showed the veterans how it was done in the Spruce Meadows Equi-Plex.

There were 20 horse/rider combinations to start the RBC Cup with seven making it onto the jump-off round. Calgary’s 16 year-old Ben Asselin and his mare Lolita set the early time to beat, 36.52 seconds. That time looked like it couldn’t be bested, with the likes of Canada ’s Olympic veteran, John Anderson falling by the wayside.

Then Jasmine Wiggins took to the ring aboard her 8 year-old Hannoverian gelding, Little Milton . The pair took risks and gunned around the course, shaving over five seconds off of Asselin’s time. The time to beat was now, 31.46 seconds.

Ben Asselin still had one card in his pocket, his 13 year-old Hannoverian gelding, Magic Man. Knowing what he had to do Asselin went to work on the jump-off course. The clock stopped a mere hair after the time to beat set by Wiggins. The day would go to the youngster from Okotoks, a win for Jasmine Wiggins and Little Milton.
