(Des Moines, Iowa) – The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) in Des Moines and Hooves and Paws Rescue in Glenwood partnered to remove 39 sick and badly neglected horses from a 40-acre property in Glidden, IA in rural Carroll County. This was a two day effort to relocate the horses that began with removing approximately half of the horses on November 21 and concluded with the remaining half on November 27. The horses were relocated to multiple rescue groups and foster homes throughout Iowa and Nebraska including 8 horses that are now being cared for by the ARL where they will finally receive badly needed veterinary care, food and a warm shelter.

“This is the third time in 2010 that the ARL has received severely neglected horses and this case is by far the worst,” said Tom Colvin, Executive Director for the Animal Rescue League, “these horses had been living without food, shelter and veterinary care for an undetermined amount of time. The horses now face a long road to recovery as we head into the coldest months of the year.”

To help these 8 horses, the ARL is seeking donations of 5, 10 or even 100 bales hay and monetary donations to help cover their ongoing veterinary expenses. Hay can be dropped off 7 days a week, 9:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. at ARL Main. Donations can be made here (RE: "Help for the Horses") or mailed to:

Animal Rescue League of Iowa, Inc.
Attn: "Help for the Horses"
5452 NE 22nd Street
Des Moines, IA 50313

Once healthy, the horses will be available for adoption through the ARL’s Barn Buddy adoption program. Currently there are 7 horses available for adoption at the ARL.
