Tragedy: Calvados Z Dies Suddenly at Oslo Horse Show
Christian Ahlmann’s nine-year old stallion Calvados Z, died suddenly on Sunday morning in the stable at the Oslo Horse Show.
Ahlmann had ridden Calvados Z on Friday and in the Rikstoto Grand Prix on Saturday.
The reason for the sudden death is not yet clear. It was speculated that a rupture of the aorta might have caused the death.
On Ahlmann’s request, a postmortem was done at the Olso University, but the results are not yet known.
Calvados Z (by Chellano Z x Carthago Z) was owned by Ahlmann’s sponsor Marion Jauss.

horses do die from 'sudden death'. it happens very quickly and is difficult to predict. i had a horse die from it, while i was riding, and it was so quick there was nothing that could be done.

Tammie, there is not a lot of information we can find. It seems the horse became distressed and a vet was called (and did arrive quickly) but the horse could not be saved.
The details are vague and the post mortem results are not yet in.

it certainly was!! the horse was the youngest of our 3, and had always been totally healthy. we were on a hack in the forest on a wet winter day. everything was totally normal and my daughters were ahead of me on the trail. my mare started to jog a bit, i put my legs on her and said, no, we're walking, and she dropped!! the pony and daughter came back and the pony sniffed irish. the other mare, her best mate didn't sniff her, and she was upset for 2 weeks until she came to grips with the loss of her friend.

As Vickie said, these things happen: I was at the barn one day and one of the brood mares out in pasture was acting colicky. Someone was hand-walking her in the barn aisle and she started getting wobbly in her back end which horses sometimes do when in pain from colic. She then literally dropped dead at my feet. Very quick. It turned out she had an aneurism which is not uncommon in both horses and people. I know of at least two other horses to which this has happened (and a couple of people who had aneurisms, but not fatal.) I'm not saying that Calvados Z's case was an aneurism, but things like this do happen, unfortunately.
