Two riders near the town of Brentwood in Essex were struck by a motorist last Sunday morning.  One rider, Jane Mitchinson, age 63, was killed and the other rider was taken to the hospital, treated, and later released.  

Ms. Mitchinson's horse died outright while the second horse had to be euthanized.  

The vehicle was a van driven by a 51-year-old man who was arrested by police.  He was charged with causing death by careless driving.  

Police are continuing their investigation and request that any witnesses call them at 0300 333 4444.
