Mare Extraordinarie, Zenyatta has won her 17th consecutive race, giving her the longest winning streak by a modern day thoroughbred in unrestricted races, and beating the 16-race winning streaks set by such horse racing legends as Cigar, Citation and Mister Frisky.
The 6-year-old mare won the $200,000 Vanity Handicap by a half-length on Sunday at Hollywood Park, rallying to overtake St Trinians approaching the wire. She ran 1 1-8 miles on the synthetic Cushion Track of her home track in 1:49.01.
The victory also gives the superstar mare a record-breaking three-time title in the California race.
Owned by Jerry Moss and Ann Moss, Zenyatta won the Vanity Handicap in 2008 and 2009. The statuesque bay mare also earned the Eclipse Award from the Thoroughbred Racing Association in 2008 and 2009 for Champion Older Filly or Mare.
Zenyatta’s other major wins include the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic and the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Classic.
